Paper Competition

CIGRE-US National Committee Next Generation Network (NGN) is holding a synopsis (abstract) and paper competition to encourage students and early professionals to share their experience and knowledge with others in the industry.

The CIGRE-US NGN synopsis template document must be used to format the synopsis for submittal.  The authors of the top ten synopses will prepare technical papers according to the 2019 CIGRE-US NGN paper template document (2019 CIGRE Paper competition). The authors of the top five papers will present their papers at the 2019 Grid of the Future conference, where one grand prize will be awarded.

Dates:

April 15, 2019: Synopsis Due to CIGRE-NGN@burnsmcd.com
(Deadline extended from April 1 to April 15!)
May 14, 2019: Top 10 notified of synopsis
(Deadline extended from April 30th to May 14th!)
June 30, 2019: Top 10 participants submit papers
August 31, 2019: Top 5 participants notified of paper acceptance
November 4, 2019:  Top 5 participants present at the 2019 Grid of the Future Symposium
November 5, 2019: The first-place winner will be announced at GOTF 2019

Prizes: 

The winning participant will have an option to choose between a registration to the 2020 Paris Session or 2020 CIGRE Grid of the Future Symposium. In either case, the winner will receive up to the $1000 travel stipend as well as the opportunity to submit for a presentation slot.

Rules: 

1. During the synopsis step, if the participant’s synopsis is not selected to prepare a paper, participants are encouraged to prepare a paper based on the synopsis and submit it for the 2019 Grid of the Future Symposium.

2. If a participants paper is selected as one of the top 5 to present at the 2019 Grid of the Future Symposium, they may submit to the NGN competition ONLY. Do not submit for the Grid of the Future Symposium also.

3. If the participant’s paper is not selected to be in the top 5 papers, the participant is encouraged to submit the paper to the 2019 Grid of the Future Symposium. The deadline for submission is July 26, but will be extended to accommodate NGN paper competition participants.

About the Paper Competition

In 2015, the NGN held its first Paper Competition to encourage students and early professionals to share their experience and knowledge with others in the industry. The competition was successful in accomplishing this, as well as providing a great experience to all involved.

2017 Competition Results

On October 24, 2017, the winner of the Next Generation Network (NGN) Paper Competition was determined. Each contestant was graded on a number of different categories, with a maximum of 500 points that could be earned. The finalists came within only a few points of each other. We are proud to announce our 2017 Grand Prize Winner, Reynold Cornell!

Reynold is an up and coming engineer with AEP and currently works in their Asset Health Center. Reynold’s winning paper was entitled “The Asset Health Center, Implementation of Online Monitoring and the Grid of the Future.”Reynold was awarded an honorary plaque from the Next Generation Network and will have travel and registration costs covered for our 2018 CIGRE General Session in Paris!

2016 Competition Results

In 2016, the NGN held its second annual Paper Competition to encourage students and early professionals to share their experience and knowledge with others in the industry. The US competition is part of the international collaboration in CIGRÉ, where each country can submit 4 entries to the 2018 Paris Session Presentation Showcase Competition.

The competition consisted of multiple phases. Participants received feedback on their submission at each phase from the five judges.
